Tourism information

Lyon is located in central France and is the second largest city in France with an urban population of over a million inhabitants.

Lyon is a fascinating French city with rich heritage resources that reflect the different eras and tell the story of the city. Lyon's listing by UNESCO as a World Heritage site gives recognition to two exceptional features:

-"continuity of urban development" , the listed site covers a territory of 500 hectares (1235 acres) where the entire history of the city can be seen. This urban development started from the founding of  the Roman city of Lugdunum and passed through the medieval, renaissance and modern times. Lyon is especially famous for its "traboules, surprising secret passages available to explore in the medieval and renaissance parts of the city, its roman theaters and Basilique de Fourvière.

-And as "an outsanding illustration of city planning over the centuries" in the continually populated and active territory.

Lyon is also a popular tourism attraction because of its active cultural and nightlife scene, and because of its world famous gastronomical heritage. This centuries-old tradition is an intrinsic part of the way of life in Lyon, which is also known as the gastronomic capital of the world.

Other than that, the city has also other touristic attractions, which are found in the high class museums of Lyon, covering diverse  areas from natural history and contemporary art to World War II resistance history. Finally, one should not forget one of the largest city squares in Europe, and two major urban parks that include  a popular zoo and botanical gardens.
